Everybody hates it, but it’s absolutely necessary at least once a week. It’s no riddle – it’s cleaning your room. Spare your parents or live-in partner a headache and a nervous breakdown next time they enter your place, and here are a few simple rules on how to clean your room to remember so you will get it done with no stress and hassle.

How to Clean Your Room: Getting Prepared

Of course, it’s a perfect practice to keep up a nice, orderly condition of your room every day, but with a busy schedule or – why not – just general laziness, it can be a pretty daunting mission. But if you make it to your only day off and decide to clean up, here are some tips to save your time and make the entire thing less morbid.
1

Get in the Mood

First, put on your favorite music and don’t let anyone disturb you either by phone or on Facebook. I’d recommend putting on headphones to keep all the distractions away. When all is set, you can start cleaning!

2

Get Equipped

Think of it as a little battle that requires just the right approach and weapons. Shop for the following items and make sure you are not very thrifty on these important tools to make sure you have everything in place for the entire cycle of your "adventure":

  • A good brush for sweeping the floor

  • A powerful vacuum cleaner with a range of speeds

  • Microfiber dusters

  • Washing liquids

  • Trash bags

  • Air fresheners like aroma diffusers

3

Get Your Plan

When starting out on a big cleaning spree, work out your ideal plan to include all the surfaces and corners of your room to be cleaned. In the following part of the article, we are going to share our strategy for how to clean your room in four easy steps while keeping track of the parts you’ve already cleaned and steadily progressing.

How to Clean Your Room: Getting It Done in 4 Steps

1

Gross Clean-Up

At this stage, you get rid of the largest obstructions and those piles of clothes that have been waiting for you on the chairs and the floor for the entire week. For this, you will need some trash bags and a laundry basket. Nothing should escape your attention. If you happen to have a big bedroom, don’t forget to look under your bed and in the wardrobe, sweep through your drawers to make sure no unwanted leftovers of yesterday’s crisps are here. When tackling the hips of clothes, don’t forget to fold them nicely and put away back in the wardrobe before (finally!) making your bed.

2

Organizing Your Stuff

When all the major obstructions are put away, you can actually get down to minor things that are also included in our guide on how to clean your room. You may find that your books, magazines, CDs, socks, shirts, shoes, and god know what are scattered all around the place. Personally, I find some strange delight in going through my little souvenirs and placing them correctly on my shelves – I regard it as some sort of meditation. For organizing your possessions in neat collections, use boxes or other convenient containers, shelves, and drawers. If you lack the space to organize everything, get simple shelves from DIY stores or decorate cardboard boxes with funky titles on them to identify their contents.

3

Actual Cleaning

After you’ve done everything to clean off every surface, you can get down to dusting, swiping with wet tissues and vacuum-cleaning the floors. Arrange this stage clockwise not to miss anything, and make sure to dust off the higher surfaces first in order to spare yourself time on cleaning floors over and over again. If you are still struggling with how to clean your room, go on to the next stage as this is what should always come after an hour of diligent and mindful tidying up.

4

Reward

When you finish, take one last round around the room to make sure you didn’t forget some occasional rubbish under your bed or in hidden nooks and corners. As soon as you’re convinced your room is perfectly cleaned, open the windows a bit wider to let in fresh air, light up your favorite aroma candle or burn a scented stick. After that, have a good rest by putting on the movie you were longing to see, or altogether plunge into a hot bath to relax and forget all your worries. It surely helps to remember that cleaning experience as something really nice, with a good wrap-up in the end!

Generally speaking, the art of how to clean your room is not that hard to grasp if you make it your regular practice. For example, I prefer to reserve one day off during the weekend to brush up and prepare everything for the start of the working week. It’s also great to combine cleaning with cooking some special meal that you can’t afford during your usual working days due to the lack of spare time.

To make it super fun, you can also invite your friend to help you out while sharing good stories along the way, or turning it into a mix of cleaning and socializing at the same time with some good music on and a variety of refreshments to keep you going.
